Image Analysis, Processing and Visualization

What you do with your images is as important as how you acquire them. You may need to process them, visualize complex multi-dimensional datasets or extract numerical data. Understanding what to do - and what not to do - is essential.

LMCF can always help with specific analysis of data and we have a variety of software to use. We are offering an introductory one-morning short-course that may be of interest if you would like to acquire some general understanding and skills in working with images.

Course format:

  • Scheduled periodically. Please use this form to join the waiting list for the next run of the class
  • Some introductory material on principles
  • Bring your laptop and work with the examples
  • Mainly based on FIJI/ImageJ

Topics covered include:

  • File formats
  • Opening microscope-specific image formats
  • Bit depths and grey values
  • Histogram and contrast scaling
  • Use and limitations of color
  • Making figures accurately
  • 3D visualization principles and basic operations
  • Quantification - Numbers, sizes, intensities and other basic operations. . .

Number of places is limited, please email Sam if you are interested in attending and mention the things that are of interest to you.

To bring with you:

  1. Your computer and power supply
  2. FIJI software installed on it and updated
  3. These files that you need to unzip (these are the example images we will work with)
  4. These are the slides we will go through - you may find it useful to have a paper print out 4 or 6 to a page

Future events and activities aimed at custom programming and more advanced analysis are a possibility. Please let Sam know if this is of interest to you and we can attempt to put in contact people with similar interests.
