FAQs
Use of the facility
Who
can use the LMCF microscopes?
All LMCF microscopes are open
to all members of Duke University and the Medical Center.
How can I start using
a microscope?
Look through the information on the facility website and
fill out the new user form. It
is best that you start using the scope soon after training,
so request training just before your samples will be ready.
How does training work?
We will show you how to use the microscope and software, often with
a demo sample first and then perhaps with any samples you have. Once
you feel comfortable, you can use the microscope whenever you want. We
are happy to help you in the future with any problems you have or
further training/assistance you require.
I
only need a couple of images, can somebody in the facility
just take them for me?
Possibly. Many samples take a few rounds of preparation and imaging
to get a good result, so in most cases it is best for you to learn
how to use the scope yourself.
How can I learn more about microscopy?
LMCF offers a simple introduction to microscope
web tutorial and
a couple of courses.
Computer issues
I've forgotten my password,
what is it?
Unfortunately, LMCF neither knows what your password is or has the power
to reset it. If you need help with your netid password (for the online
booking) contact
OIT.
If you need
help with your ASADMIN password (for French Science scopes) call Kevin
Campbell
660-7438. If you are in PCB, contact Netfriends.
What do I do with all the image files?
You need to get the files to your lab/department server/computer for
storage. If you are using a scope physically in your department you
might be
able to connect directly to your server. Otherwise you can store the
files temporarily on the data hard-drives or the server. Memory sticks
and portable hard-drives are very useful for moving the data.
Please don't leave behind duplicate copies of your files.
How do I connect to the server to get my data?
See the information on this
page.
The
server is not mapped. How do I map it?
1. Right click on "My computer", either on the desktop or in the
start menu
2. Select "map network drive"
3. Browse to the server or type in the location (eg //bio-lemming/confocal
for the Biology server)
4. Click "finish"
Common problems with the microscopes
Where is the taskbar in Metamorph?
Probably hiding. Try using the scroll bar at the bottom of the
metamorph window, or press F4 to show/hide the taskbar.
The microscope has crashed or some component isn't cooperating. How do I fix this?
Restating at least part of the system usually fixes problems with software/control
issues. Please see the crash
help page for
some common solutions.
